Colombia's President Warns 'I Will Return to Arms Again' should United States Launches an Attack.

President Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume in their verbal conflict, increasing tensions bilaterally after American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has cocaine mills and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.

Rising Rhetoric and Accusations

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the US president threatened analogous armed intervention against Bogotá, asserting the country is also "very ill" and governed by a sick man who likes making the drug and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia is the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the trade.

A Frayed Alliance

The country has long been a key ally of the US in the fight combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, however, the relationship have deteriorated dramatically after Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by guerrilla factions like one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members demobilised subsequent to a landmark accord.

Petro's Firm Response

When asked whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump said: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle in the 1990s, categorically refuted Trump's claims. "I am no illegitimate and I am not a narco," he stated.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a post.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will become numerous insurgents across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom many of the country holds in high esteem, they will unleash the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," Petro warned.

From Fighter to President

He passed a period in his early life as a member with the radical M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed that he never engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing the nation's constitution in the early 90s and eventually served as a prominent senator. He was mayor of the capital city before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow not to touch arms again ... but for the homeland I shall resume arms again," he affirmed.

Increased Security and Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the national leader's personal security had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump, however, leaders from all sides of Colombian politics have rejected the threats of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Political and Financial Strains

The US revoked the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged American soldiers to ignore orders that violate law. Later, in October, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and various close collaborators.

At the same time while America bolstered its military presence in the Caribbean and striking suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed strikes on maritime targets in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
