Amateur players are getting the chance to earn A$1m when they face world-class athletes - headed by world number one Carlos Alcaraz - in a single-point showdown leading up to the year's first major

Tournament officials of the Melbourne major have revealed the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will match everyday competitors against 22 professionals in a elimination competition at Melbourne Park

The Unique Competition Operates

Competitors are set to play 'the decision-making game' to determine who serves or receives, and the player who wins the point will advance to the subsequent phase

The champion of the event will earn approximately half a million pounds

By comparison, players who reached the semi-finals of the primary tournaments in the last edition won A$1.1m

The American Grand Slam organized a revamped, independent combined gender tournament in August which motivated top singles players to take part, with the victors receiving $1m

The year's first major held its debut quick-fire event earlier this year, but the prize fund was sixty thousand Australian dollars and it had limited exposure

The Russian player was the sole elite competitor involved, and his campaign came to an end when he directed the sole serving chance permitted failing to clear the net in his last eight match

Competition Details

Organizers have not specified precisely how the event will work, but it is projected to emulate a comparable structure to this year's edition

The elite players will be allowed to make one service and the non-professionals two times - as is the usual procedure in standard play

While it is uncertain how the bracket will work, there will be several competitive phases and the location will be the primary court rather than the alternative court

The final stages will be held in a night session instead of 1pm local time

Entry Requirements

Domestic competitors - or foreign participants who have signed up with the governing body - can enter 'quick-match event' tournaments at their neighborhood facilities

The champions of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a selection process, with a single non-professional from every geographic division chosen to take part in the 'grand finale' in a nighttime event on Wednesday, 14 January

There will also be a qualifying draw in late year which amateurs, lower ranked pros, famous personalities and sport stars can participate in

It begins on the starting date and the pair of champions will advance to Wednesday's 'final showdown' with the additional everyday players and top-ranked athletes

"No matter your experience, the overall victor will receive the award. Registrations will begin shortly at facilities throughout the nation"

Event organizers stated there were "more big names to be announced soon", while the tournament site said "famous personalities" would be involved
